Roland Zimmermann is an internationally renowned expert in prenatal and perinatal medicine. Since 2001 he has been Director of the Department of Obstetrics of University Hospital Zurich.

After completing his medical degree in Zurich in 1983, Prof. Zimmermann undertook specialist training in obstetrics and gynecology in the Bernese Oberland, Winterthur, Wetzikon, Zurich, and Germany. He then trained in fetomaternal medicine in Zurich and London. In 1999 he was awarded a diploma by the Fetal Medicine Foundation of Prof. Kypros H. Nicolaides and in 1998 he was granted FMH certification in the subspecialty of fetomaternal medicine.

From 2001 to 2003 he was President of the Academy of Fetomaternal Medicine of the Swiss Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics. He is a member of many international and national societies and an editorial board member of several scientific journals. His special clinical interests are diagnostic ultrasound, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, intraumbilical blood transfusion, and the management of high-risk pregnancies and births. He was awarded a Habilitation in Zurich in 1997. His research laboratory work is focused on the prevention of premature birth and in particular on the repair of ruptured fetal membranes. His research projects are supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the European Union.
